The teams meet Saturday afternoon at the Greensboro Coliseum’s field house in a rematch of the 2022 title meet. UCA (35-0) has blown through most opponents, while Avery County (27-7) had stiffer tests to reach this stage again. These teams are familiar competitors in the finals. The Eagles were at home as the East Region’s top seed, defeating Pender 66-18 and North East Carolina Prep 49-28. That sends UCA to Wednesday’s action against Pamlico, with Thomasville and host Rosewood also meeting in the third round at that site. Providence Grove, wrestling Wood has had a solid wrestling season, with the postseason approaching. The senior, who competes in the 285-pound weight class, placed second in the RJR Invitational late last month in Winston-Salem. Wood reached the championship bout of that tournament with three pins. Wood finished sixth in last season’s Class 2-A state tournament. He’s a multi-time all-conference selection in football as a lineman for the Patriots.

Dominic Payne of Trinity and Davonte Brooks of Eastern Randolph were in the same category at times. Payne poured in 41 points Friday in a 65-64 victory at Uwharrie Charter Academy.
