Archdale’s new library branch manager makes shift

Ashley Rose (Courtesy photo) ARCHDALE – Ashley Rose is the new branch manager of the Archdale Public Library and thankful for the opportunity. “It’s a pretty rare occasion when one of these becomes open,” Rose said last week. Rose replaces retired Matt Shaw, who finished at the end of 2023. He retired after 13 years. “I had been training with Matt in December,” Rose said. “I already worked with the Randolph County Public Libraries, so it was a good transition.” Rose came from the Asheboro Public Library, where she was primarily in the children’s room. ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Asheboro defeated visiting Eastern Randolph 80-75 in a highly anticipated matchup behind Jerquarius Stanback’s 26 points and David Rodriguez’s 25 points. The game pitted last season’s regular-season champions from the Mid-Piedmont Conference and Piedmont Athletic Conference. It was the first time the Blue Comets and Wildcats met in four years. Randleman, which has ruled the league in recent seasons, is the lone undefeated team in PAC play entering this week. Yet it sure looked like an upset when the host Tigers defeated Southwestern Randolph. Audra Petty scored 15 points and Chenleigh Robinson had 11 points when Randleman won 47-41 on Friday night. With just a few days before the end of the year, the North Carolina Zoo exceeded one million guests in a calendar year for the first time in its history. On Dec. 27, Ran Liu and his family became the one millionth visitor to the North Carolina Zoo in 2023. Wheatmore, girls’ basketball ‌Routh has been a contributor for Wheatmore during what has been a bounce-back season for the Warriors. Wheatmore placed third in the Ledford Christmas Tournament last week. Routh, a junior, has been among the consistent scorers for the Warriors, who’ve had a relatively balanced attack. In the tournament, Wheatmore won 51-26 vs. host Ledford before falling 51-41 to East Davidson. The Warriors capped their tournament participation by defeating West Davidson 53-32. With a 9-4 record entering January, the Warriors have matched last season’s win total. Routh also played on the school’s volleyball team.

GREENSBORO — An off-duty Greensboro Police sergeant was shot and killed by suspects who allegedly stole beer from the Sheetz gas station on Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax Saturday night. Sgt. Philip Dale Nix, a 23-year veteran of the Greensboro Police Department, witnessed individuals stealing beer from the station and was shot after confronting them. New downtown oyster bar will open Thursday

Full Moon Oyster Bar, a North Carolina-based seafood restaurant group, will welcome guests for the first time at its 128 Trade St. location on Thursday, January 4, according to a release from the company. ASHEBORO – The Southwestern Randolph girls’ basketball team didn’t need big offensive numbers to win the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational last week. The Cougars handled things with their defense. So the outcome was three victories in three days in the tournament at Asheboro High School.
