Providence Grove, cross country She’ll be in the Class 2A state meet for the second year in a row after a strong showing in last week’s Midwest Regional. Bernhardt, a sophomore, had a strong month, winning the Piedmont Athletic Conference championship and then placing seventh in the Midwest Regional. Last year, she placed 27th in the state meet among 132 entrants. Bernhardt was a standout last spring in track and field and a member of the All-PAC team.

ASHEBORO – High school students in the Randolph County School System can select from a variety of program offerings through Randolph Community College in a new partnership announced last week. It’s called a Workforce Roadmap as part of a college and career readiness Continuum. This is an expansion of a program that began in 2003. The program provides RCSS students with post-secondary Career Academy certificate and credential opportunities. Cross country runners from county secure spots for state meet Asheboro’s Cam Letterlough had another big week as the Blue Comets clinched the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship in boys’ soccer. Randleman, cross country Mercado was the winner of the boys’ race in the Piedmont Athletic Conference championships last week at Wheatmore’s 3.1-mile course. Mercado, a senior, finished in 18 minutes, 48 seconds for a 10-second edge on teammate Jedidiah Dake. Providence Grove won the team title by one point on Randleman. Earlier in the month, Mercado was 61st out of 182 runners in the Hagan-Stone Cross Country Classic in Pleasant Garden. Randolph County School System receives more than $100,000 in grant funding

ASHEBORO – The Randolph County School System has found itself with a bit of extra funding. At its Oct. 21 meeting, the RCSS Board of Education approved the acceptance of two grants. The first was a $50,000 Career and Technical Education Grade Expansion grant from the Education and Workforce Innovation Commission. The grant will provide partial funding to support a middle school career development coordinator whose job is to ensure students have a documented career development plan and will support staff with facilitation of each student’s plan.
