ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jack McArthur

Uwharrie Charter Academy, wrestling McArthur continues to rack up victories during his senior season on the mats. He has been a regular qualifier for the state tournament during his career with the Eagles. He has moved up to the middle weights, often competing at 138 pounds. UCA is coming off another big week in duals. First, there was a 72-6 victory against Eastern Randolph in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Then in a two-day home dual-meet event, the Eagles defeated Cary 53-18, Greensboro Grimsley 47-18, New Bern 49-21, North Rowan 78-6, Northern Guilford 58-15, Pisgah 40-33 and Western Harnett 78-6. ‌

Prep boys: Asheboro Blue Comets make more statements

ASHEBORO – It was quite a week for Asheboro’s boys’ basketball team. The Blue Comets topped a strong in-county team to wrap up non-conference play and then won its Mid-Piedmont Conference opener. It all added up to a 10-game winning streak entering this week. Asheboro defeated visiting Eastern Randolph 80-75 in a highly anticipated matchup behind Jerquarius Stanback’s 26 points and David Rodriguez’s 25 points. New downtown oyster bar will open Thursday

ASHEBORO — Asheboro's newest restaurant will open its doors this week. Full Moon Oyster Bar, a North Carolina-based seafood restaurant group, will welcome guests for the first time at its 128 Trade St. location on Thursday, January 4, according to a release from the company. Full Moon has other locations in Clemmons, Southern Pines, Morrisville, Jamestown, Concord and Atlantic Beach. The menu features traditional steam house seafood with steamed and raw oysters holding top billing. The bar's shuckers will provide a unique service for Asheboro diners. ASHEBORO – The Asheboro boys’ basketball team breezed through three games in the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational on its home court. The tournament didn’t provide much variety for the Blue Comets, who defeated teams it had already defeated a total of five times earlier this season. The title game Friday night at least proved to be a rubber match, with Asheboro trouncing Randleman 63-41 after the teams split two earlier meetings. ASHEBORO – The Southwestern Randolph girls’ basketball team didn’t need big offensive numbers to win the SportsTone.net Christmas Invitational last week. The Cougars handled things with their defense. So the outcome was three victories in three days in the tournament at Asheboro High School. Providence Grove, girls’ basketball ‌Ingram had a 25-point outing when Providence Grove won its Piedmont Athletic Conference opener by defeating visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy last week. That continues a nice trend for the Patriots, who held a 6-2 overall record through the end of last week. With that, it meant that Providence Grove had matched the team’s win total for the entire 2022-23 season. Defending champion Randleman received 21 points and 10 rebounds from Audra Petty in a 47-41 home victory against Wheatmore. Providence Grove edged visiting Uwharrie Charter Academy 59-53 with Brooke Ingram racking up 25 points. Southwestern Randolph had an easy time with visiting Trinity in a 55-4 result.
