ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Lanie McDaniel

Eastern Randolph, softball Eastern Randolph carried a four-game winning streak into spring break, and McDaniel did her part. Posting two hits in a Piedmont Athletic Conference victory against Randleman was among her contributions. McDaniel, a senior infielder, also drove in two runs in the Randleman game. She had a hit and scored a run in a 2-1 victory at Northern Guilford. She also scored in a one-run decision against Providence Grove. With six doubles and 13 runs batted in, she’s among the team leaders in several offensive categories.  McDaniel was an All-PAC girls’ golfer in the fall.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tyler Kimball

Wheatmore, baseball Kimball has been a boost at the plate for the Warriors in their quest for a turnaround season. Wheatmore won three of four games in a seven-day span. That included two victories against Eastern Randolph in Piedmont Athletic Conference play and a non-league triumph at West Davidson. Earlier this month, Kimball, a senior, had a hit in each game against Randleman. He homered in one of those two games. The Warriors, who haven’t had a winning season since 2018, entered this week with a 5-5 overall record.

SILER CITY — Mountaire Farms is partnering with churches and non-profit organizations in four states to provide complete meals for families in need at Easter. The event for Siler City comes Friday morning. Employees and volunteers will be packing and distributing 5,000 meal boxes to pre-registered groups, according to information from the company. There will be no walk-ups for this event, as all boxes are already reserved for families, churches and non-profits. NC congressional delegation honors Coble 

Members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation donned their madras jackets on Friday, March 24, to honor the late Howard Coble on his 92nd birthday. A Republican who lived in Greensboro, Coble served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years representing the Triad and surrounding areas. He died in 2015.  Coble was a graduate of Appalachian State University and earned his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. He served in the Coast Guard and served two terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives following a stint as the state’s Revenue secretary. Rep.
