Trinity alum Sheffield takes football job at Wheatmore

Jacob Sheffield (Courtesy photo) TRINITY – Jacob Sheffield is the new football coach at Wheatmore, but his ties to the school extend more than a decade. Most recently, Sheffield has been an assistant coach at rival Trinity, his alma mater. He said he has “fallen on both sides of the tracks” when it comes to the neighboring schools. He takes the vacancy left when Philip Yarbrough resigned after seven seasons as Wheatmore’s football coach. The Warriors were 2-8 last year. More than 9,000 turn out for early voting in Randolph County

ASHEBORO – There were 9,245 voters casting ballots in early voting in Randolph County. That was the final tally reported by the Randolph County Board of Elections on Saturday. Saturday marked the heaviest turnout for early voting with 1,294 voters. That was slightly higher than Friday’s 1,241. Early voting began Feb. 15. The primary will be held Tuesday, when voters must report to their designated precinct in order to cast a ballot. A photo ID is also required. Man charged with murder after Franklinville shooting

ASHEBORO – A Franklinville man was expected in Randolph County District Court today to face murder charges. Randolph County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Roy Clay Williams, 54, for murder on Tuesday, after responding to a report of gunshots and finding a woman dead at the residence on Clark Avenue in Franklinville. Williams was being held without bond at Randolph County Jail after being booked just before midnight on Feb. 27, 2024. He was expected in Randolph County District Court in the morning. Trinity, boys’ basketball Payne keeps pouring in big point totals and he moved to No. 2 all-time in Trinity’s boys’ basketball history last week. The senior guard has compiled more than 2,200 points in his career. He passed Josh Pittman (2,187 points) in a Piedmont Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal last week against Eastern Randolph. He has boosted the Bulldogs into the PAC Tournament finals for two consecutive years. Payne also has been a standout for Trinity in football and tennis. LIBERTY – A Liberty police officer resigned from his position with the department after being charged with DUI following a crash while pulling into the police department to start his shift earlier this month.
