Wheatmore, baseball ‌Kines, a junior left-hander, has been a key pitcher for the Warriors, who won three of their first five games. The Warriors opened Piedmont Athletic Conference play last week by defeating rival Trinity twice. Kines was the starting pitcher for the league opener. During the previous week, Kines struck out 10 Asheboro batters in four innings of Wheatmore’s season-opening victory. Kines is fresh off the basketball season when he led the Warriors in scoring.

Asheboro ZooKeepers go cashless for 2024 season

ASHEBORO – The Asheboro ZooKeepers baseball team will operate on a cashless basis for the 2024 season at McCrary Park. The team announced last week that the cashless set-up will include the purchase of tickets through a new partnership with SimpleTix! along with purchases made at concession and souvenir stands. For fans needing assistance in the process, off-field staff will be available to assist, team officials said. The ZooKeepers are a collegiate summer league team playing in the Coastal Plain League. The season begins with a May 23 home game against the High Point-Thomasville HiToms.

Juke Harris, a Wake Forest signee, poured in 34 points for Salisbury, which won its 20th consecutive game. Sixth-seeded Randleman (23-6), the regular-season and tournament champion in the Piedmont Athletic Conference, received 22 points from Tyshaun Goldston and 14 points from Connor Cassidy. Caraway Speedway set for opening weekend

SOPHIA – Facility updates at Caraway Speedway will be evident to many fans when the track opens for the 59th season of racing this weekend. Part of the venue renovations include aluminum seating on the grandstands on the front stretch, replacing wooden bleachers, track officials said. The track’s “Warrior Weekend” is slated with events Saturday and Sunday. NEWTON – Randleman’s boys’ basketball team kept its season alive with Tuesday night’s 62-59 victory against Newton-Conover in the third round of the Class 2-A state playoffs. Tyshaun Goldston scored 21 points for the sixth-seeded Tigers (23-5), who’ll play Friday night at second-seeded Salisbury (26-3) in a West Region semifinal Connor Cassidy’s 18 points and Greg Price’s 11 points also boosted Randleman, which held on after leading 52-41 going to the fourth quarter. Eastern Randolph, boys’ basketball Brooks has been a key contributor for the Wildcats, who advance to this week’s third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs. The junior forward rates third in scoring (8.8 points per game) for an Eastern Randolph team that has made playoff runs in consecutive seasons. He’s the leading rebounder for the Wildcats with nearly eight boards per game. Eastern Randolph has reached at least the 18-win mark in back-to-back seasons after going six straight seasons with losing records. Brooks also has been a member of Eastern Randolph’s Piedmont Athletic Conference championship football team.

Trinity alum Sheffield takes football job at Wheatmore

Most recently, Sheffield has been an assistant coach at rival Trinity, his alma mater. He said he has “fallen on both sides of the tracks” when it comes to the neighboring schools. He takes the vacancy left when Philip Yarbrough resigned after seven seasons as Wheatmore’s football coach. The Warriors were 2-8 last year.
